Going into the studio to shoot scenarios is nothing new. Shooting live to tape while switching between three cameras, slaved to betacam decks, is also a proven time saving and valuable production technique. How can we do it better, faster, and cheaper is a routine question. The team from the Learning Commons at the University of Calgary answered that question with an innovation that saved thousands of dollars, weeks of time, and updated this standard production model. A 5-day shoot was planned for the Communication Skills in Cancer Care CD-ROM. Using 3 cameras, switched live, to 4 decks including the switched master, plus a stock PowerMac G4 with nearly 1/2 a terrabyte of internal drive space on 7 drives, a cheaper, faster, better way was discovered. This worked so well that during the production of the CD-ROM no tape from the shoot was actually used. The Digital Video was used starting the day after the shoot for editing, content reviews, annotating, and adding expert commentary ultimately resulting in a 3 CD-ROM guide for cancer care professionals to learn communication skills. | |||||||||||
